MALIK SCHOOL

Kohat, Pakistan

Edu-GIRLS Support to Date: $109K

2024 Enrollment: 402 Girls in Grades 3 to 11

The Founders’ Vision is to educate girls living in poverty, to help them break through barriers of class and poverty by providing them with a quality education.

Kohat is a city with a population of 220,000 people and is regarded as the center of the Bangash tribe of Pashtuns. Pashto and the Kohati dialect of Hindko are the main languages spoken in Kohat. It is a conservative area of Pakistan where many of the people are migrant workers. When these workers move to find work, their daughters must leave school to move with them. Some girls are commonly forced to discontinue their schooling after the 5 th grade to attend a madrassah or to be taught how to sew or cook in preparation for an early marriage.

In 2018, Edu-GIRLS along with CARE Pakistan, established a separate campus for girls at the Malik School in Kohat, where English is now the medium of instruction.

  • Four grades, 8, 9, 10, and 11 have been added since 2018.

  • Enrollment of girls from grades 3 to 11 has increased to 400.

  • Free transportation is provided for all girls at the Malik School.

  • A new Tablet Program has been launched for primary school students to encourage digital learning and provide access to technology resources as well as help them improve their English, math and science skills.

  • A new Career Development program has started with a Career Counsellor who also collaborates with various organizations and alumni to plan regular counselling sessions or senior girls to guide them along potential career paths.

  • A new ASSET independent testing of learning levels is about to begin.

Future Plans:

  • Focus on the progress of the girls in the intermediate grades so that they can go forward and become financially independent for themselves and their families, and to become role models for the other girls in The Malik School.

  • Enhance enrollment and attendance by reaching out to motivate families for educating their girls and providing services to overcome transport constraints.

  • Launch an independent system for assessing learning levels of the skills of the girls and teachers.

  • Launch independent testing of learning levels by ASSET used by other Edu-GIRLS supported schools.

  • Launch the Digital Learning program for all girls and the Career Development Program for girls in senior grades.

Education is a gift that no flood can take away. Edu-GIRLS joined hands with CARE to further its mission of educating children in marginalized communities. I hope that by providing quality education, we can make a significant difference in the lives of children, their families and communities at large.
