Takoma Park YOUTH Chapter
We are Takoma Kids for Edu-GIRLS, a Chapter of Edu-GIRLS, run completely by teens living in the Takoma Park area. Takoma Kids for Edu-GIRLS was started in 2013. That year we raised $500! In the past 12 years, we have raised $57,000 for Edu-GIRLS.
OUR MISSION: As the Edu-GIRLS Youth Chapter, we hope to inform our generation about the lack of proper education that is shattering the lives of girls around the world. Our goal is to raise both awareness and funds in our communities. This youth chapter is project based. Students are also able to choose their level of involvement. This is a great opportunity to learn about the pressing issues that are facing our world while making a difference in the lives of many young girls. Furthermore, this allows young people to meet like-minded people who are passionate about similar issues.
Supported By Takoma Bicycle, Middle Eastern Cuisine, Takoma Beverage Company, Tabletop, Salon Jam, House of Musical Traditions, The Covered Market, Cielo Rojo, and Mark’s Kitchen
How we raise the money: Takoma Kids for Edu-GIRLS organizes and plans an annual neighborhood yard sale where we sell items donated from friends and neighbors and collect donations from supporters.
The Raffle: In addition we held a raffle, where gift certificates from stores in Takoma Park were offered as prizes.
2020 Online Yard Sale: COVID-19 affected our traditional yard sale. We had our first meeting at the beginning of March. We went to local businesses and received several gift cards and donations for the raffle. However, due to COVID-19 we canceled our traditional yard sale and adapted our plans to hold an on-line yard sale. We were successful in raising $5,875, which included donations along with proceeds from the online sale, which was more than we raised in 2019! Thank you to all our supporters.
Visiting Vimukti Girls School: In the spring of 2016, three founders of Takoma Kids for Edu-GIRLS went to visit Vimukti Girls School in Jaipur, India, one of the four schools supported by Edu-GIRLS. When we visited, we were a little bit baffled because the girls did not look like they lived in slums at all! They were neatly dressed, all had the same nice orange and green uniform, and they were really well behaved. The campus was in a rented space yet was also beautiful. Now the girls are at another campus and Edu-GIRLS and the school is trying to raise enough money for their own campus.
How you can help: It is really simple. Some examples on how you can help are:
You can collect old toys, books, clothes, etc. and set up a miniature yard sale!
If you want to make your yard sale bigger, you can go around your neighborhood collecting unwanted old toys, books, clothes, household appliances, etc. for a charity yard sale. Your neighbors can come and buy new stuff, too. You’d be surprised at how much money you might make!
You can set up lemonade or hot chocolate stands.
You can tell your friends, family and relatives about Edu-GIRLS.
For your birthday, you can ask for people to donate to Edu-GIRLS instead of give presents to you.
Be creative!!
Student Service: Edu-GIRLS is able to distribute student service hour forms to students who work to raise money for Edu-GIRLS. Just email your applicable form to info@edugirls.org. Thanks!
